The Silmavar is a colossal underground series of caves, caverns, tunnels and ruins. Its origin and purpose are completely unknown, even to the myriad creatures that make their home there. Legends speak of a conclave of crazed humans, lead by their king, Saeren, and of hordes of undead in the thrall of the great Lich, Numenor, and of goblins and balrogs and lakes of fire and magma. Some even speak in hushed whispers of a small group of ancient dragons guarding some of the labyrinth's oldest ruins.

A simulacrum of the entire region has been pulled into the depths of the astral plane where unfathomable forces twist its essence and feed off the echoes of its denizens.

Adventuring

Getting to the chessboard

At the beginning of the underground city, you meet this quest mob:

Galafas says 'If you mean to help me then bring me my stolen portal fragments.'
Galafas says 'The queen fragment is most important but I'll need the others too.'
Galafas says 'You might also want to find my checkmate claims that were taken.'
Galafas is having a bad day, he is scowling something awful!

Saeren carries a knight portal fragment and wears a claim of checkmate plus some other unimportant items.

Numenor the Lich carries a pawn portal fragment and wears a claim of checkmate plus some other unimportant items. Whenever he attacks a player, his inventory may randomly clear or turn into a pawn or queen fragment. You can reset his inventory by engaging him, looking at his inventory and calming/reengaging him to reset it.

Sverrick carries a bishop portal fragment and a queen portal fragment and holds a claim of checkmate plus other unimportant items.

Other mobs in the area carry other fragments. Give Galafas five fragments (queen ticket, plus pawn+knight+bishop+rook fragments in inventory), and he'll create a portal. Enter that portal and you'll end up above the chessboard:

(Don't "en po" twice -- the room above the chessboard contains more portals.)

 Surveying the board
 [Exits: No Obvious Exits]
A small platform floats precariously above the chaos below.
Reapers mingle with forgotten chess pieces in an incoherent
display where an orderly game should be taking place.

Oddly enough there only appears to be Shizaga's pieces
on the board. A keep is visible in the distance ... perhaps
 Bhyss's pieces relocated?

A small rule board lies discarded on the ground.
A portal to the keep is here!
A gateway to Thorngate is here!
(Glowing) (Humming) A portal to square H8 is here.
(Glowing) (Humming) A portal to square A8 is here.
(Glowing) (Humming) A portal to square H1 is here.
(Glowing) (Humming) A portal to square A1 is here.
A display is here showing the state of play.

look board:

The game works with similar rules to standard chess. All Shizaga's
pieces are on the board. You play the part of Bhyss's pieces by
wearing skin coats of His pieces. Each room has the following
 precedence:

 King
 Queen
 Rook
 Bishop
 Knight
 Pawn
*ALL* Shizaga's pieces have precedence over all player
"skin" pieces. (Even a Shizaga pawn outranks a Bhyss
Queen). In order to win the game you must checkmate
the Shizaga King without killing him but arranging your
pieces such that he is threatened on his square and all
squares around him. You can see the current state of
play by looking at the display. <look display>

To claim the checkmate you must give a checkmate claim
to Galafas <give claim galafas> from this room.
Be warned, queen and rook skin coats tend to
 break on wearing!

To get costumes (skin coats also used for marble boots transmog), kill Bhyss pieces and skin their corpses.

A straightforward way to win chess is:

1 - Clear the board of most of Shizaga's pieces 2 - Charm Shizaga's King. He's is level 50 and can be charmed and moved to the room of your choice. 3 - Put Shizaga's King in square H8 and players wearing Bhyss pawn costumes in H6/H7/G6/G7.

Once you've won (give a checkmate claim to Galafas while players on the board are doing a checkmate), you will then see a message:

 Check Mate!
 The game has ended!
The demi-plane begins to collapse in upon itself....
You have really ruined things for the new master of this plane....
 A collapsing plane
 [Exits: No Obvious Exits]
With the game over this fracture in the astral plane
is quickly healing. It would be unwise to remain here
 for any length of time.
(Glowing) (Humming) A portal to safety is here.
(White Aura) This demon serves Kalindor.
(White Aura) This demon serves Kalindor.
(White Aura) This demon serves Kalindor.
(White Aura) A regally dressed devil is irrate that you have ruined the game.

Kalindor looks like this:

Kalindor has visited this forgotten realm for aeons
and has taken great delight in the suffering of all
its denizens trapped to play this eternal game.

An expression of rage begins to cross his tranquil face
as he orders the attack which will end your life.
 Kalindor is brutalized.

 Kalindor is using:
 <worn around neck> [Pristine ] a mantle of brutality
<worn on feet> [Pristine ] (Magical) (Glowing) (Humming) Marble Boots
<held in offhand> [Pristine ] (Magical) (Glowing) (Humming) the Gambit Declined
<wielded> [Pristine ] (Glowing) (Humming) the Gambit Accepted

Shortly after checkmate is declared, the entire group (even if in different rooms) is brought in to fight Kalindor and the demons. If you can, it helps to split damage/tanking -- i.e. have tanks separately target 1.demon, 2.demon, 3.demon, and Kalindor.

Oh, also, casting vitae flux on the demons' blood pools can generate new portals to other transmog areas:

A blood stained portal to Overgrowth has congealed here!
A blood stained portal to Tssasskas Redux has congealed here!
